A self-propelled ship named “Therese Johaug” is solving traffic problems in Holmestrand by replacing heavy transportation through the town center. The ship can carry 16 truck trailers and travels directly from Moss to Langøya, removing 60% of trucks heading to Langøya from the roads, which amounts to 6000 trucks and 12,000 trips through city centers. The ship has been operating for a week with one departure per day, but this will increase to two times daily. The initiative is led by Noah, an waste management company, and is praised by Holmestrand’s deputy mayor, Jan Fredrik Vogt, who believes it will reduce noise and congestion in the city. The vessel’s operation is seen as a significant step towards sustainable transportation and improvement of urban environments.
