Chinese researchers claim to have cured a person from diabetes using a groundbreaking treatment involving cell transplantation.
The patient was no longer dependent on external insulin after 11 weeks and gradually reduced oral blood sugar medications over the next year.
Follow-up examinations showed almost complete restoration of the patient’s insulin production, and the patient has been insulin-free for 33 months.
The study was published in the respected journal Nature, with experts calling it a significant breakthrough in diabetes treatment.
The treatment involves reprogramming the patient’s own cells to produce insulin and injecting them into the liver, where they produce insulin.
While it is still early to determine if this could become a standard treatment, experts recognize the potential of this approach.
In Norway, where around 270,000 people have diabetes, researchers are also working on similar principles in a study involving stem cell treatment for type 1 diabetes.
The findings from Shanghai are seen as a potential lifesaving solution for the large population of diabetics in China, where millions are dependent on insulin treatment.
