Chang’e-6 was launched on May 3 and successfully landed on the moon’s far side.
The spacecraft landed in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, one of the largest known craters in the solar system.
It is the first time samples will be collected from this area, which has rarely been explored.
The mission involves collecting soil and rock samples using drilling and a robotic arm.
The Chang’e program is named after a Chinese moon goddess and is part of China’s space exploration efforts.
China aims to send humans to the moon by 2030, a feat previously achieved only by the US.
The US also plans to send astronauts to the moon, with a target date of 2026.
NASA’s original plan for this mission was later this year, but it has been postponed multiple times.
