Rederiet stopped all transportation of its cargo ships on December 15 after several foreign ships were targeted by rocket attacks from the Iranian-backed Houthi movement in Yemen.
However, on Sunday Maersk announced that they believe the security situation has improved after the multinational security initiative Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) has been established and is operational.
“Now that the OPG initiative is underway, we are preparing to allow our ships to resume sailing through the Red Sea in both eastbound and westbound directions,” the company said in a press release. The company further stated that the safety of its employees is of the highest priority.
The sea route through the Red Sea is considered crucial for world trade as a large part of the traffic between Europe and Asia passes through here. However, several of the world’s largest container shipping companies have halted traffic in the Red Sea due to the rocket attacks from the Houthi movement.
