- UDI discovered 650 aliases among asylum seekers using facial recognition technology
- Many were allowed to stay in Norway, some for years, with children born in the country
- Most aliases were from the years 2006-2012, with some dating back to the 90s
- Somali nationals had the most aliases, followed by individuals from Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and Sudan
- Some Filipinos, Thais, and Vietnamese used false identities, especially in au pair programs
- Most cases resulted in a review of residence permits or citizenship, but many were allowed to stay due to factors such as having children in Norway or facing risks in their home countries
- UDI began using facial comparison technology in 2021 to prevent further cases of aliases
- Previously, biometric identification was mainly done through fingerprints, but expanded use of biometrics has improved identity verification
- UDI does not have data on how many individuals have been deported due to false identities uncovered through facial recognition technology.
